Why come to the US from Nepal?

For many Nepali immigrants, Massachusetts is a place of new beginnings, a place to pursue educational and work opportunities, and a place to belong. During this time, the Nepali population in Massachusetts grew, with families, students, and professionals building lives in cities such as Boston, Somerville, Cambridge, and Lowell. People come from Nepal for various reasons: some to pursue their higher education, others to build a better future for their family, and many to join loved ones already living in the United States.

Immigration to the U.S. from Nepal has been influenced by various programs, including the Diversity Visa Lottery, student visas, and employment sponsorships. The earthquakes in 2015 and the continuous political and economic challenges faced by the country have taken many out of the country in search of stability. Today, Massachusetts is a home to one of the thriving Nepali communities that keep alive the cultural traditions while embracing new opportunities in the U.S.

Community Resources

Going to a new country is certainly a challenge; however, the Nepali community in Massachusetts has built strong networks to support newcomers. Organizations such as the Nepali Association of Boston have placed a strong emphasis on cultural programs and networking activities. The Greater Boston Nepali Community helps new arrivals and provides an opportunity for Nepalis to celebrate their traditions. The Himalayan Lions Club participates in community advancement programs. Temples and cultural centers also provide assistance to Nepalese immigrants in maintaining their religious and cultural practices and a sense of home far from Nepal.

Processing Times in Boston

It’s critical to understand visa processing times if you intend to immigrate to the United States from Nepal, as they can differ greatly.

Depending on demand and availability, family-sponsored green cards may take one to five years to obtain. The duration of employment-related visas varies depending on labor certification and other requirements. It is advisable to apply as soon as possible, even though student visas like the F-1, J-1, and M-1 are normally approved in a few months. Should you be chosen for the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, you have to finish the application process in the same fiscal year. To make sure your application is processed quickly and accurately, my office can guide you through each step of the visa application process if it sounds challenging.
