Immigrating to Massachusetts from Nigeria

Massachusetts is a small but diverse state. While Massachusetts does not have the largest Nigerian population out of all states in the US, its welcoming atmosphere, great school systems, and job opportunities, make it the perfect place to begin your immigration journey. Approximately 13,525 Nigerian-born residents live in Massachusetts, making important contributions to its cultural life, economy, and neighborhoods.

Historically, Nigerian immigration to the U.S. began increasing in the late 1960s,  particularly during the Biafran War when many left the country searching for safety and stability. This has continued as individuals and families pursue education, careers, and a better future in the United States. Today, more Nigerians are choosing Massachusetts as their home each year, drawn by its educational institutions, job opportunities, and growing Nigerian-American community.

Community Resources

For Nigerian immigrants looking to stay connected to their community and culture, Massachusetts offers plenty of options. The Yoruba Community of Massachusetts organizes cultural events, provides support networks, and helps preserve Yoruba traditions and language. The Action Congress of Nigerians in the United States (ACONUSA) serves as a national voice for Nigerian Americans and offers programs focused on civic engagement and community development. The Nigerian American Multicultural Association (NAMSA) hosts cultural events and educational programs that foster community and promote Nigerian heritage.

If you are immigrating with children, the Nigerian Youth Organization Boston (NYO Boston) offers mentoring, academic support, and community events to help youth and their families thrive.

Although there is no Nigerian embassy or consulate located in Massachusetts, the Nigerian Consulate General can be found in New York City, just a few hours away by train, bus, or car, providing convenient access to official services and consular support when needed.
