Immigrating to Massachusetts from Russia

Massachusetts has one of the largest Russian-born communities in the US.  As of 2023, approximately 17,000 Massachusetts residents are Russian-born. Many have settled in cities from Brookline to Springfield, where Russian culture and community continue to grow.

Immigration from Russia to the US began in the late 1800s, largely brought on by Russians’ need to escape religious persecution. Today, nearly 2.3 million Russian immigrants and their families live across the U.S., and more are choosing Massachusetts every year.

The Russian Cultural Center Samovar organizes programs, workshops, and events across the state, including cultural festivals, school visits, and university partnerships. The Icon Museum and Study Center in Clinton, MA is another local center of Russian culture.

Massachusetts does not have a Russian consulate or embassy, but the nearest one is located in New York City – a relatively short train ride away.
